First of thank you very much velo and chuu for mentioning this anime. I really recomend it as one of the best mindfuck murder mystery animes i saw there hasn't been an anime that kept my interest like this for a long while so much so that i saw both seasons in two sittings because the school closed at night and since it's break my 24 hour pass doesn't work.. I would write some sort of valid review instead of saying it's just awesome but i'm lazy right now..but it is awesome if you like murder mystery.
DON'T GIVE ME ANY SPOILERS FOR THE SECOND SERIES I HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET. I've been meaning too, but I know it's one of those things I'm going to want to marathon, and I haven't had any spare time for an anime marathon recently. I'm on a short break at the moment however, so perhaps next week. Didn't I write a review or some kind of OMGWTFBBQAWESOMESAUCE post on the other forum? If you're feeling lazy you could just do a copypasta from that. Still, even though I am an utter, utter wuss when it comes to anything even remotely frightening, the first 4 episodes of this series are nothing short of an absolute masterpiece. There's so many things about Higurashi for me to dislike (crap artwork, horror, lolis, harem elements, based on a game, etc. etc.) but I adored it, it's a fantastic series. It's such a shame the company releasing it in the US went bust before they finished putting it out, I was going to get the DVDs.
Don't worry i know the spoiler policy well enough and don't wish to feel your wrath in any shape, way or form. There's also a third season but i don't know much about it yet..so i have no idea if it's been fansubbed or not.
ANN has no information on it, so I'd wager it's still in production. Higurashi's too huge a franchise to not have one of their many otaku encylopaedists keeping tabs on it, they list it as and OVA though, so I guess 'aired' is the wrong word.
In my defence I stopped while writing my reply to chat to someone on facebook, hence the delay. I COULD have gone back & edited my post to look like I was just replying to his post all along, and that he hadn't outwiki'd me, but I didn't because I'm honest like that.
i hate that word too actually..just started reading the manga of higurashi today and the anime is very true to the manga so far. Getting the right order to read it from onemanga was a chore since there's so many different names so hopefully i got it right.
Higurashi is based on a series of doujin games, and more than likely the manga is an interpretation of the anime, so it following the anime closely wouldn't be too great a surprise.
True enough but still there's usually a bunch of things happening in the manga that get cut from the anime.and those things are what i hope to see reading the manga.
Yeah, but that's for stuff that starts life as a manga. There will probably be bits from the games that end up in the manga, but it's not a matter of the manga having 'things cut from the anime' as if it was the original work - it's just another adaptation in the same way the anime was, so there may well be plenty of things the anime chose to keep from the games, that the manga doesn't.
It seems that each manga which relates to the individual 'question' and 'answer' games aren't drawn by the same people, and were published simultaneously, a few months before the anime aired, which was April 2006. Though the 1st manga volumes for Onikakushi-hen, Watanagashi-hen and Tatarigoroshi-hen are all December 2005, the anime would probably already have been in post-production by that point, and the two are mostly unrelated - the similarities will come from the fact that they're both mostly faithful adaptations of the games.
Either way, I head the game design of Oyashiro-sama is ultra-lame, so I hope the manga doesn't stay too faithful to the game, I kind of wanted to read the manga eventually too.
I've finally started on Kai, I'm on episode 1. I'm probably going to disregard all forum-etiquette and double/triple/octuple post from here on out as I watch.
Courtesy reminder though - NO SPOILERS PLEASE! Normally I don't mind, but Higurashi is one of those series' where you have to go in knowing next to nothing or it just isn't as effective, (unless you're re-watching to understand it better and pick up on the bits you missed...)
So far I'm enjoying it (ep 1), though the OP isn't as effective as the first series' theme, it is ULTRA creepy that it the very end played backwards sounds like the very beginning of the S1's OP, so it gets bonus points for that. It also gets bonus points for making everything less ugly, and for seeming to be setting itself up as Rika-centric, because Rika (and Rena) are my favourite killer lolis. The ED shot with Shion and Satoko hugging is HORRIBLE - so creepy! I'm really not looking forward to the 'answer' arc that goes with Satoko's question arc, because I find Satoko to be so intolerably annoying. More Evil Rika Please.
