Director of Corporate Strategy

Your Role at Bolt

As Director of Corporate Strategy, you will be the leader of the strategy function at Bolt, reporting to the Chief Business Officer.  I don’t want to make the role sound too grandiose lest I mislead anyone - yes, you will have an incredible amount of autonomy and frankly, you will be in a position to have a massive impact on our strategy.  As anyone who has done this role before knows, the CEO and the executive team is often going to make the ultimate decisions on strategy, so your role is to make sure those decisions are informed by the right data, the right framing, and the right advice.

Since strategy can mean a lot of things, let me narrow in on the key areas where you would be focused.  
We are often looking at entirely new opportunities to expand whether that be new product lines or new geographies - in order to do this well we need to model out the opportunities, analyze the competitive landscape, and write a business case.  Then, if we pursue the opportunity, we need someone to ensure that we have a cross-functional execution plan and a smooth handoff to functional teams.  

This role sits in the same org as our partnerships team, and there will be a close alignment of strategy and BD.  Many partnerships end up being new business opportunities, and require some of the same research, scoping, and modeling as new product lines or geographical expansion.  This alignment with BD will sometimes involve working directly with current or prospective partners.

There is also a business operations aspect of this role that would involve working with the executive team to help us define and manage our OKR process, and helping to measure our success against the company’s objectives.

We occasionally evaluate M&A opportunities, and will need this role to partner with finance to help evaluate companies that we may want to acquire.

Some of the attributes that are must haves for this role include being analytical, organized, and exuding business acumen.  Your communication skills will need to be top notch, including making sure people can understand your models, easily grok your decks, and be influenced by your prose.  Ideally, you have a humble but confident voice, and when you talk, people listen because they know that you know more than they do, and they value your opinion.  

You will evaluate new opportunities and use data to answer questions about how Bolt can win new market segments, identify new product opportunities, and unlock new revenue channels.  If you enjoy structuring and tackling complex problems, are highly analytical, and like to collaborate, we want to hear from you. 

This role will initially be an individual contributor, but as we grow, the person in this role will likely need to hire a team to handle the strategy and BizOps functions at Bolt.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years total experience with significant experience delivering strategic projects to senior stakeholders
  • Management consulting would be a very useful background, and if you don’t have that, ideally something analogous
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to influence and build credibility as a peer with functional leaders within Bolt
  • Ability to independently manage projects with multiple workstreams across a wide variety of functional business problems
  • Superior analytical and problem solving skills, with demonstrated intellectual rigor, attention to detail and ability to analyze complex business issues
  • Meaningful exposure to the e-commerce and/or payments space
